Overview

The eastern districts of Karnataka; Kolar and Chikkaballapur are frequently affected by drought due to erratic rainfall and absence of any perennial source of water for drinking purposes for the populace as well as livestock in the region. It is a long standing demand of the people in the region that a permanent and dependable source of water be identified and these areas are supplied with assured drinking water. Furthermore, the ground water table in these regions has reached alarming depths due to over exploitation, as a consequence of which the available ground water is contaminated with harmful salts like Fluoride, Nitrate, etc. in excess of permissible level.

Various studies were undertaken to identify the sources of water to supply to these districts. During the course of such studies, one of the proposals which was considered apt to be taken up for further consideration was harnessing west flowing Yettinahole, Kadumanehole, Kerihole and Hongadahalla originating in the upper reaches of Western Ghats near Sakleshpura. It is proposed to divert about 24.01 TMC of water from these streams during the monsoon period from June to October. The proposal is to divert the excess flow by constructing 8 weirs restricting the height to avoid any submergence.

The Government, in its order No. ಜಸಂಇ 203 ವಿಬ್ಯಾಇ 2012, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, ದಿನಾಂಕ: 17.02.2014 has accorded the administrative approval (2012-13 SR) for Rs 12,912.36 Crores. The break-up of phase I and phase II works is given below:

  • Phase 1: Lift component: Rs. 3,527.17crores
  • Phase 2: Conveyance components : Rs: 9,385.17 crores

The project aims to provide safe drinking water to the drought prone areas of Kolar, Chikkaballapur and other needy areas of Hasan, Ramanagara, Chikmagalur, Bangalore (Rural), Tumkur en route along with filling up of 527 Nos of MI tanks to its 50% capacity with a view to recharge the ground water besides dilution of chemical contaminants of which fluoride is predominant.

Description of the work

The project is planned to execute in 2 Phases:

Phase-1 : Lift components up to DC-4 near Haravanahalli

Phase-2 : Conveyance system beyond DC-4

Phase 1

Phase 1 component comprises of the following:

  • Construction of 8 diversion weirs across Yettinahole, Kadumanehole, Kerihole and Hongadahalla streams at identified locations
  • Construction of 8 pump houses at the identified locations
  • Construction of Raising mains of suitable diameter along the selected route
  • Construction of Gravity main of suitable diameter along the selected route
  • Construction of Delivery chambers
  • Power supply arrangements

Phase 2

  • Construction of Gravity canal for a length of 264 Kms beyond DC-4 and culminating in Proposed Bhairagondlu reservoir
  • Construction of balancing reservoir at Bhairagondlu in Koratagere Taluk
  • Construction of 45 kms length of Raising Main to feed the water to the Delivery chamber at Kundana village in Devanahalli Taluk by lifting water from Bhairagondlu balancing reservoir for catering the water supply needs to Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bangalore rural districts through Feeder canals
  • Construction of feeder canals to supply the allocated water to Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bangalore rural districts for filling up of tanks and to cater water supply during needs.
